Quality of life of military firefighters of Federal District, Brazil

Introduction: Military firefighters (MF) put their lives at risk to save the lives of others and/or to defend society’s public and private assets and deal with health emergency situations, and they are more susceptible to the development of stress in the work that can be harmful to quality of life (QoL).
Objective: To assess the QoL of MF in the Federal District, Brazil.
Methodology: Descriptive cross-sectional study, with FM of both sexes. The SF-36 questionnaire and its eight domains were used, in addition to a structured questionnaire to characterize the population profile.
Results: Of the 178 MF assessed, 158 were male. The general average QoL was 69.11 ± 26.53 points. The average score (69.15 ± 1.41) for men was similar to women (68.75 ± 26.71). Functional capacity had the highest score (80.67 ± 20.25) and pain the lowest (61.21 ± 22.89). The highest number of responses occurred in the stratification of 81 to 100 points, in the domains of functional capacity and emotional aspects, while the lowest was found in the stratification from 0 to 20, in the domain of general health state and in the stratification from 41 to 60, in the domain of limitation due to emotional aspects.
Discussion: The general average found in FM in the Federal District differed form that found in active FM in a municipality in the interior of the state of São Paulo.
Conclusions: Prevention and health promotion measures should be adopted to improve the health and QoL of life of the MF.
