Introduction: Pre-sport games are playful simulations that incorporate core elements of a specific sport. Their prioritization as a method within physical education may enhance the acquisition and improvement of technical and tactical skills in football, thereby facilitating talent identification.
Objective: To assess the effects of a physical education model based on football-oriented pre-sport games on the effectiveness of ball dribbling and shooting techniques, compared to a traditional teaching-learning model.
Methodology: A quasi-experimental study was conducted with a sufficient sample of male students, divided into two independent groups (Experimental: n=86; Control: n=90), with homogeneous results in three out of four performance tests for dribbling and shooting. The experimental group participated in a six-month program of football-based pre-sport games, while the control group followed a traditional program.
Results: Intergroup comparisons at the end of the intervention period revealed statistically significant improvements in the experimental group (Zigzag dribbling: p=0.000; Dribbling with direction change: p=0.000; Shooting power: p=0.000; Shooting accuracy: p=0.000), but not in the control group (Zigzag dribbling: p=0.061; Dribbling with direction change: p=0.597; Shooting power: p=0.172), except for the shooting accuracy test (p=0.003). Independent test results also showed significant improvements in favor of the experimental group (Zigzag dribbling: p=0.004; Dribbling with direction change: p=0.001; Shooting power and accuracy: p=0.000). In a separate talent selection process, most selected football players came from the experimental group.
Conclusions: The implementation of pre-sport games may serve as an effective pedagogical strategy to enhance fundamental technical skills in football through physical education.
