Introduction: Parkinson's disease impairs cognitive and emotional functions, negatively affecting individuals’ quality of life. Non-pharmacological strategies, such as physical exercise, have been investigated to mitigate these effects.
Objective: To analyze the effectiveness of a 12-week Mat Pilates intervention on cognition, mood, and aging perspective in individuals with Parkinson’s disease.
Methodology: A randomized clinical trial was conducted with two parallel groups, including 23 individuals diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and mean age 61.7 (±7.5 years), allocated to the Mat Pilates intervention group (n=11) and control group (n=12). Data collection occurred at baseline and post-intervention, assessing sociodemographic, clinical, cognitive, mood, and aging perspective variables.
Results: The intervention group showed significant improvements in cognition (p=0.028) and aging perspective related to happiness (p=0.010). The control group exhibited intragroup worsening in depression (p=0.004), confusion (p=0.026), and fatigue (p=0.047). Between groups, the control group showed worsening in fatigue (p=0.005) and depression (p=0.033), while the intervention group showed improvements in anger (p=0.028) and happiness in aging perspective (p=0.023).
Discussion: The findings support previous studies suggesting benefits of mind-body practices on cognition and emotional state in individuals with Parkinson’s disease.
Conclusions: Mat Pilates proved to be a safe complementary therapeutic option, promoting cognitive, emotional, and aging perspective improvements in individuals with Parkinson’s disease.
