Abstract

Introduction: motor coordination and executive functions are key factors in child development and can be enhanced through specific physical and sporting activities such as martial arts. Disciplines such as judo and kung fu integrate motor and cognitive components that promote learning at school.

Objective: the purpose of the study was to analyze the relationship between motor coordination and executive functions in primary school children who regularly practice judo and kung fu, considering the variables of gender and age.

Methodology: thirty-one schoolchildren between the ages of 4 and 11 participated, distributed by discipline, gender, and age range (4-8 and 9-11 years). Motor coordination was assessed using the Movement Assessment Battery for Children-2, while executive functions were measured using tests of inhibition, cognitive flexibility, and attention (Go/No Go, Stroop, and Trail Making Test).

Results: the judo group performed better in manual skills and reaction times. Schoolchildren aged 9-11 scored higher in executive functions, and girls excelled in fine motor tasks.

Discussion: the findings were consistent with previous research linking physical activity with improvements in inhibitory control, attention, and cognitive flexibility, and confirm the influence of combat sports on children's cognitive and motor development.

Conclusions: structured practice of judo and kung fu is an effective pedagogical tool for enhancing the comprehensive development of students in the school context.
