Abstract

The main objective of this study is to compare the perceptions of the socioeconomic profile that tourism operators have about their hikers/visitors with the socioeconomic profile of hiking users in the mountains of Valencia region (Spain).  A mixed methodology has been used. First, 15 semi-structured interviews were conducted with entrepreneurs in the tourism industry. Secondly, 154 surveys were carried out with hikers to characterize their profile. Both samples were cross-checked to see the similarities and differences between the perceptions of both groups. The results indicate that changes in consumer trends, with the emergence of new market niches that are very interesting from a tourism point of view, such as the public new and very interesting market niches from a tourism point of view, such as women and senior female and senior public, as well as the local tourist or one-day hikers. These market segments represent an opportunity to consolidate an increasingly growing market.an increasingly growing market. The results indicate that there are some similarities between some of the demographic and economic variables studied. However, in other variables there is a misperception of practitioners by employers. This information can help to better target potential tourists. This study also provides a very detailed description of specific profiles of hikers. This information can be very useful both for private sports tourism companies to be able to segment their clients and launch very specific promotional strategies.

Antonio Vidal-Matzanke, Doctoral School. Catholic University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain; Faculty of Sports Science, Catholic University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain

Lecturer and researcher in the Faculty of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences at the Catholic University of Valencia. His doctoral thesis in Sports Science analyses the role of hiking as a dynamic element in rural areas. He is part of the Research Group on Mountain Sports: Health, Inclusion and Society at the UCV, where research lines on inclusive hiking, the use of new technologies in the mountains and tourism, among others, are being carried out.

Together with his research group, Antonio has published several papers in scientific journals of impact and has participated as a speaker at numerous conferences and seminars. He is also an active member of several research projects on hiking. He has carried out several international experiences in countries such as Norway, Sweden, Lebanon and Cyprus. He has also been Visiting Fellow at the MacMillan Center of Yale University in the United States.

Jorge Terrades is a predoctoral researcher at the UCV. He has been organising different sport events at the sport department. His doctoral thesis tries to understand the relationship between hiking and the use of digital technologies to identify the changes produced since their introduction in hiking, describing the main effects produced in the way of practicing hiking, in the environment and in tourism. He is also involved in research projects related to the study of body composition in elite athletes of different sports linked to the natural environment.

Pablo Vidal-González, Faculty of Sports Science, Catholic University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain

Professor of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the Catholic University of Valencia, Spain, and Director of the University Anthropology Research Institute. He researches the relation between people and
nature, landscapes, protected areas and rural communities. He is currently coordinating the Mountain Sports: Health, Inclusion and Society research group. His research is published in numerous journals, including Journal of Mediterranean Studies, AGER: Journal of Depopulation and Rural Development Studies, GeoJournal, Anthropozoologica, Geo Sciences, Mobile, Media and Communication, and Sport in Society.
