Effects of the Play Practice model on technical-tactical performance and perceived self-efficacy in Taekwondo

Introduction: Play Practice (PP) promotes the simultaneous development of technical and tactical skills, although there is limited evidence in taekwondo.
Objective: To analyse the effects of PP on technical-tactical performance and perceived self-efficacy in taekwondo practitioners.
Methodology: Eight children participated (M = 10.83, SD = 0.56 years). The PP intervention was carried out over five weeks, consisting of 15 sessions of 80 minutes each. Technical-tactical performance was assessed using an observational tool, while perceived self-efficacy was measured with a questionnaire. Both assessments were conducted before and after the intervention.
Results: Significant differences with large effect sizes were found in the execution of the roundhouse kick (t (7) = 2.25, p = 0.059, d = 0.80, %Δ = 32) and in the anticipated counterattack (t (7) = 2.59, p = 0.036, d = 0.92, %Δ = 133). Additionally, participants significantly reduced the frequency of simultaneous counterattacks (t (7) = ‒2.76, p = 0.028, d = ‒0.97, %Δ = 55). Regarding perceived self-efficacy, significant improvements were observed in the technical dimension (t (7) = 4.26, p = 0.004, d = 1.51, %Δ = 34) and the overall dimension (t (7) = 3.3, p = 0.013, d = 1.17, %Δ = 23), while no relevant changes were found in the tactical dimension.
Conclusions: These findings suggest that applying the PP model can lead to positive changes in the execution of certain technical-tactical actions and in the perception of self-efficacy, both in the technical and overall dimensions, in novice children practising taekwondo.
