The traditional periodization models in soccer have some characteristics such as the individualization of the training load and the response of the training load based on biological laws. For this reason, most of these models aim for the athlete to reach a peak of form at a certain moment. However, in a sport like football, the spikes in form have to be constant over the course of the season. Tactical periodization is a training methodology, originally developed for soccer, that focuses primarily on the Game Model that a team intends to use in competition. It has been popularized by successful European coaches and has subsequently been proposed as a game model for other sports such as rugby and tennis in more recent times. To date, no conceptual model of football training periodization has been developed based on a training-teaching-learning methodology based on the Game Model. In the present work it is intended to analyze the theoretical concept of tactical periodization as a basic part of this way of understanding the training process, and at the same time to present an example of a Game Model and the different variables to take into account in the process of training and learning.
