Introduction: within their educational offer, students in the second year of Upper Secondary school in Extremadura can take the subject Physical Activity and Health (PA&H), with a teaching load of four hours per week.
Objective: The aim was to analyse the number of students who would choose to take this subject during the first year in which it was introduced, as well as its distribution by gender, Upper Secondary school mode and out-of-school physical activity (PA) practice. The influence of the grade obtained in Physical Education (PE), the perception of the motivational climate generated by the teacher and the satisfaction of basic psychological needs (BPN) during the previous academic year were also evaluated.
Methodology: 1494 students (839 girls) from 31 schools in Extremadura participated. Frequency analysis, contingency tables and binary logistic regression analysis were carried out.
Results: 39.1% of the students selected this optional subject and the Social Sciences and Humanities modality obtained a higher proportion of enrolments. There were significant differences according to gender, confirming the influence of the grade obtained the previous year in PE and extracurricular PA. Perceived classroom climate and satisfaction with their NPB during the previous year also affected the decision.
Discussion: There were gender differences, in contrast to other studies. In addition, other personal factors and teaching behaviour as a contextual factor explain the reasons why students choose to take this subject.
Conclusions: Gender differences have to be considered, in addition to the influence of motivational variables relating to the previous year on this choice.
