Introduction: Motivation towards physical education classes in adolescents is influenced by various psychological, social, and personal factors.
Objective: This study examines the psychometric properties of the Perceived Locus of Causality Scale.
Methodology: The total sample consisted of 590 participants, of whom 294 were Mexican and 296 Spanish, with a mean age of 10.69 years (SD=0.70). A confirmatory factor analysis was performed to examine the factor structure of the questionnaire.
Results: The results indicate that a tetra factorial structure is feasible and adequate. This four-factor structure (intrinsic motivation, integrated regulation, introjected regulation and demotivation) showed adequate reliability and validity fit indicators, according to statistical and substantive criteria. In addition, the factor structure, factor loadings and intercepts are invariant in the two populations studied (Mexican and Spanish). However, differences were observed between the populations in the means of the demotivation factor.
Discussion: The confirmatory factor analyses in the total sample support a four-factor structure with moderate standardized factor saturations, which coincide, in part, with the structure proposed for the questionnaire by some authors.
Conclusions: However, these results are limited in scope. Future research is needed to confirm the structure obtained to provide more robust evidence regarding the factorial structure of the scale. It is recommended that future research replicate these findings in larger samples.
