Introduction: In youth soccer, ankle injuries are a concern due to their high incidence and impact on physical and athletic development.
Objective: To analyze modifiable risk factors among young soccer players with and without a history of ankle injury in the city of Popayán, Cauca.
Methodology: Descriptive and comparative cross-sectional study with 172 players divided into injured (n = 85) and uninjured (n = 87). A structured questionnaire, semi-objective measurements, body composition, and functional physical performance tests were applied.
Results: A significant association was observed between playing position and the presence of injuries (p = 0.04). Players with more than seven years of practice had a higher incidence of injury (62%; p = 0.02). The injured players showed a higher percentage of body fat (14.17%; p = 0.03) and differences in body mass index (p = 0.01). Hip extension strength differed in the left leg (p = 0.00) and right leg (p = 0.01). In the vertical jump, differences were found in the height reached (p = 0.00) and flight time (p = 0.00). Dynamic balance showed differences in the left posterolateral reach (p = 0.01).
Discussion: Anthropometric, functional, and athletic factors were associated with the presence of injuries in youth soccer players.
Conclusions: Young people with a history of injury exhibited less favorable profiles in body composition, hip extension strength, vertical jump, and dynamic balance.
