Introduction: Elevated waist circumference, as one of the indicators of cardiovascular risk, is an easily accessible anthropometric measurement that allows health professionals to have a quick strategy for evaluating and making decisions regarding lifestyle.
Objective: To identify the prevalence of elevated waist circumference and its associations with sociodemographic variables in a sample of adults from northwestern Colombia.
Methodology: A quantitative, descriptive-correlational, retrospective, and cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 37,558 participants. Inferential analysis was performed using chi-square tests to evaluate relationships between variables, with elevated waist circumference as the dependent variable
Results: The prevalence of elevated waist circumference was 87.6% (n = 32,917). Female sex was identified as a primary risk factor for altered circumference (OR = 5.18). Urban residence increased the odds of the event by 28.3% (OR = 1.285), while single individuals and those in common-law marriages showed a significantly lower risk compared to divorced subjects. Furthermore, physical activity was established as a relevant behavioral protective factor (OR = 0.74). HDL cholesterol acted as a protective factor (OR = 0.97), whereas glycemia and triglycerides showed a positive association with risk, with increments of 0.6% and 0.2%, respectively.
Discussion: Social determinants of health are pivotal to understanding the health-disease continuum and are associated with increased waist circumference.
Conclusion: Social aspects such as marital status, sex, area of residence, and lifestyle are associated with elevated abdominal circumference.
