Introduction: Eating behavior issues require objective assessment tools that go beyond diagnostic criteria, (as risk behaviors may not constitute a full disorder but still require early intervention). The Spanish-Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (S-EDE-Q) is available for this purpose; however, there are no studies adapting it to the Colombian context.
Objective: This study aimed to adapt the S-EDE-Q instrument (Peláez-Fernández et al., 2012) in a Colombian sample. Methodology: A total of 538 Colombians participated (Study 1 = 262, Study 2 = 276). In Study 1, a pilot test was conducted to verify vocabulary, followed by exploratory factor analyses. In Study 2, adjustments derived from Study 1 were implemented, followed by further factors and reliability analyses.
Results: The response type and timeframe influenced the validity of the test (the initial structure yielded two factors: one for 3-month items and another for 28-day items); therefore, the response format and timeframe were unified to the last 3 months. This new version, comprising four independent subtests, shows adequate reliability indicators α = .85-.93; ω = .89-.90) and model goodness-of-fit (CFI = .965-.999; TLI = .930-.999; SRMR = .011-.065).
Conclusions: The S-EDE-Q is a valid four-dimensional battery (restraint, eating concern, shape concern, and weight concern) for screening eating behaviors. The development of a short version (33 items) for Colombia is proposed.
