Introduction: Academic stress among students has been related to factors such as gender, final exam grades and coping strategies used, resulting in a complex interaction between these and mental well-being.
Objective: To analyse the levels and manifestations of stress among university students when facing individual assessment activities of a practical nature, related to gymnastics content, according to gender.
Methodology: In this descriptive study of quantitative design, 54 students of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences took part in the study. For the collection of information, the Inventory of Academic Stress (IEA) was administered prior to the evaluation of individual technical execution.
Results: The subjective perception of stress was higher in the female gender in terms of physiological response, cognitive and motor response. On the other hand, the cognitive manifestation factor of stress had the highest level of response scores, being this type of symptoms the most generalised between genders.
Discussion: The university population presents a moderate level of stress when faced with gymnastic assessment activities of individual character, with the cognitive manifestations being the most notable. In this sense, assessment activities of a collective nature, with a co-educational character, could be an alternative to decrease the pressure.
Conclusions: The future professionals of physical activity and sport should have adequate tools to improve the management of anxiety and stress of the students before the various individual assessment activities.
