Abstract

Introduction and Objective. The aim of the present study was to establish the factors that influence the physical-sports practice habits of eighth grade elementary school students of the commune of Valparaíso, Chile.

Methodology. The random sample consisted of 618 students (females=295/males=323) in eighth year of elementary school, aged between 13 and 14 years. A sports habits questionnaire for school populations (Spanish National Sports Council, 2011) was employed. Binary logistic regression was used to determine the relationship between the variables.

Results. The results have demonstrated that the variables of gender, the student practice with the family and the type of educational establishment are statistically significant (p<.05) and would explain the behavior of the students' physical-sports practice outside the Physical Education class.

Conclusions. The main conclusions point to the existence of a relationship between physical-sports practice and gender, with an increase in the probability of practice among male students. The physical-sports practice of the students increases when it is done with a family member. The type of educational establishment (private, subsidized or public) to which they belong is also an influential factor in physical-sports practice, since it is greater when the students belong to a private educational establishment compared to their peers belonging to a subsidized or public educational establishment.
