EspañolAbstract
Introduction: Several studies have highlighted the benefits of physical activity (PA) in children and adolescents; however, many of them do not reach the recommended levels of PA to obtain healthy benefits. Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze PA levels in primary and secondary school students on days with and without physical education (PE) classes. Methodology: Forty students participated, 16 were boys (40%) and 24 girls (60%), whose mean age was 11.2 years (SD = .78), all of whom attended school in Zaragoza. Each student completed an ad hoc record sheet noting the steps recorded on his or her activity bracelet in ten PE sessions, on six full days when they had PE class and six days when they did not, in six breaks and in six trips to and from home to school. Normality was studied through the Shapiro Wilk test, which led to the use of nonparametric tests, using the Wicolxon and Mann-Whitney U tests for analysis. Results: It was found that the days with PE class (M=1148 steps) were significantly more active than those without (p>.001), complying only in the first case with the daily PA recommendations. No significant differences by sex were found in any variable. Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of PA practice in schools to achieve significant health benefits.
