Abstract

Introduction and Objective. Falls in older adults represent a health problem with serious consequences, including fear of falling. Forward head posture (FHP) is a condition that can increase the risk of falls. There is evidence of the benefits of strength training in preventing falls, and it has been proposed that including social and recreational components could enhance the effectiveness of interventions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of strength training with a social and recreational component on the risk of falls and fear of falling in older adults with FHP.

Methodology. Ninety-three older adults with FHP were included and divided into three groups: strength training with a social and recreational component, traditional strength training, and a control group. Forty-five-minute interventions were delivered twice a week for 16 weeks. Fear of falling (Fall Efficacy Scale) and fall risk (Tinetti Scale) were assessed pre- and post-intervention.

Results. Conventional strength training reduced fear of falling (p<0.05) and fall risk (p<0.05) after the intervention. Training with a socialization component showed no significant changes in fear of falling (p>0.05), but did result in an improvement in fall risk (p<0.01). When comparing groups, there was a decreased risk of falls in the training groups compared to the control group (p<0.05).

Conclusions. Strength training with and without a social and recreational component reduced the risk of falls in older adults with FHP.
