Objective; To analyze the effects of mouthwash with carbohydrates in athletes. Material and methods; A search was carried out in the journal Retos, in addition to Medline / PubMed, Web of Science, Springer, Scopus, Europe PMC, SPOLIT, SPORTDiscus, SciELO, Epistemonikos and Trip database. The searches were carried out between the years 2018 and 2022 using the strategy "carbohydrates AND mouthwash AND sports", selecting only systematic reviews with meta-analysis. Results; 318 records were identified, of which after applying the eligibility criteria, three were analyzed, which results showed possible improvements on the mean power output (Standardized Mean Difference (SMD) = 0.25, 95% CI; 0.04 to 0 .46), athletic performance (SMD = 0.15, 95% CI, 0.04 to 0.27), and muscular endurance to failure (Mean Difference (MD) = 1.24, 95% CI, 0.70 to 1.77), while time trial (SMD = -0.13, 95% CI; -0.36 to 0.10) and maximum muscle strength (MD = 0.25, 95% CI; -1, 81 to 2.32) does not show significant improvements. Conclution; The administration of a protocol of mouth rinses with carbohydrates in a constant way could constitute an ergogenic aid. However, these effects are still controversial.
Keywords: Dietary supplements; carbohydrates; mouthwashes; athletic performance; sports medicine.
