Abstract

Introduction: The structureof competition in youth football is a controversial and debated topic. Objective: The objective of this study was to analyse the influence of the competitive context on the training process according to the opinion of youth football coaches at professional clubs in Spain (men's first and second divisions, and women's first division).

Methodology: A questionnaire consisting of 57 questions grouped into seven dimensions was used, from which questions related to sociodemographic variables and the competitive context dimension were selected.

Results: The results showed the importance coaches place on competitions at these ages guar-anteeing a minimum number of matches regardless of the final classification, where a minimum number of minutes must alsobe played. In addition, there is a very high consensus on the need to adapt the competition at these ages, using 5x5 game formats, while other rules of the game must be modified to improve player participation and learning. Finally, with regard to the be-haviour of both coaches and parents, it is considered very necessary to penalise inappropriate behaviour, even to the extent of possible consequences on the results of matches or competi-tions.

Conclusion: It can be concluded that coaches express the need to adapt different rules and reg-ulations related to the development of competitions at these ages.
