Introduction: In recent decades, the Chilean education system has experienced a steady increase in the enrollment of migrant students, revealing significant challenges in teacher training, particularly in the area of Physical Education (PE).
Objective: This study aims to evaluate the intercultural competencies of PE teachers based on their initial teacher training and pedagogical practices developed in culturally diverse contexts in southern Chile.
Methodology: The research is framed within an interpretive paradigm using a qualitative-phenomenological approach. Semi-structured interviews and classroom observations were conducted with nine teachers (one in Dance and Music and eight in Physical Education) from institutions under various administrative jurisdictions.
Results: The results show significant limitations in initial teacher training regarding the management of cultural diversity and the implementation of inclusive pedagogical practices.)
Discussion: Although teachers demonstrate willingness, empathy, and openness towards diversity, their strategies are mainly based on empirical experience rather than formal theoretical foundations. PE emerges as a privileged space to promote inclusion and intercultural coexistence by fostering horizontal interactions through play, motor skills, and cooperation.
Conclusions: It concludes with the urgency of incorporating structured intercultural competencies into initial teacher training and continuous professional development programs as a fundamental requirement to strengthen a truly inclusive, equitable, and culturally relevant education.
