Introduction: Higher education faces the challenge of strengthening environmental awareness as a component of sustainable development, recognizing teachers as promoters of pro-environmental values and practices.
Objective: To compare the dimensions of environmental awareness between pre-service students and in-service teachers in the field of physical education and sport in Durango, Mexico.
Methodology: A quantitative, descriptive-comparative, cross-sectional, non-experimental study involving 338 participants (235 students and 103 teachers), selected through non-probability self-selection sampling. A validated environmental awareness scale assessing four dimensions cognitive, affective, conative, and active was administered. Descriptive statistics, Student’s t-test, and the Mann–Whitney U test were employed, following normality assessment using the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test. Missing values were handled through available-case analysis without imputation.
Results: Statistically significant differences were found in the active and cognitive dimensions (p < .001). Teachers showed more favorable results in the active dimension, whereas students obtained more favorable scores in the cognitive dimension. No statistically significant differences were identified in the conative (p = .550) or affective (p = .085) dimensions.
Discussion: The findings are consistent with previous research indicating that environmental knowledge does not necessarily translate into pro-environmental behaviors, highlighting the importance of integrating practical and contextualized learning experiences.
Conclusions: Environmental awareness exhibits different patterns of development between the two groups. Strengthening initial teacher education and continuing professional development through strategies that integrate environmental knowledge, contextualized motor experiences, and sustainable practices is recommended.
