Abstract

Introduction and Objective. Nowadays, the physical self-concept has become a valuable tool to explore personal development from the earliest stages of childhood through adulthood. The Physical Self-Concept Questionnaire (CAF) has been widely used to evaluate the origin, evolution, and various components that constitute this construct, with the practice of physical activity being one of the main factors influencing its development.

The main objective of this research was to assess the self-concept levels of professional female soccer players in the Mexican context. Additionally, through an adaptation of the CAF instrument, the study aimed to evaluate its reliability in a population that practices sports and receives economic benefits as a result of their professional activity.

Methodology. A cross-sectional quantitative approach was employed, with convergent validity linked to sports marketing. The adapted instrument was applied to a sample of 100 professional female soccer players in Mexico. The purpose was to examine the relationship and the effect of sports marketing on self-concept, as well as to determine the reliability of the questionnaire when assessing populations that obtain financial income from their athletic practice.

Results. The results indicated that the questionnaire demonstrated acceptable reliability when applied to populations whose professional activity generates economic gain. However, two dimensions of the construct did not show internal consistency with the rest of the evaluated dimensions.

Discussion. These findings suggest that when physical self-concept is assessed in athletes who derive economic benefits from their sport, certain dimensions of the construct may behave differently compared to those observed in non-professional populations. The presence of sports marketing as an external influence could play a role in shaping the perception of one’s physical abilities and self-image within professional environments.

Conclusions. As a consequence of these findings, a new version of the instrument was developed, including only the dimensions that showed internal consistency and alignment with the characteristics of the evaluated population. This adapted version allows for more accurate assessment of physical self-concept among professional female soccer players and provides a validated tool for future research in high-performance sports contexts.
